What wind actually does to snow on a roof:


  • It scours the windward slope. The side facing into the wind can end up nearly clear.


  • It deposits everything on the lee side. That snow does not disappear. It relocates, and it concentrates.


  • It builds drifts behind anything that interrupts the flow. Ridges, dormers, chimneys, parapets, rooftop equipment, and screen walls all create a pocket of still air behind them where snow piles up deep.


  • It loads the roof step hardest. Where a lower roof section meets a taller wall, which describes most houses with an attached garage, an addition, or a two-story section, drifting concentrates against that wall. This is a well-recognized structural concern and it is where problems tend to start.

Warning Signs Worth Acting On

Call the day you notice any of these rather than after the next storm.


  1. Interior doors that suddenly stick, or fresh gaps appearing at the top of a door frame. That is the frame racking as the structure deflects.
  2. New drywall cracks, especially radiating from door and window corners or running along the ceiling line.
  3. A ridge line that looks bowed from across the street, or rafters visibly bellying when you look at them in the attic.
  4. Creaking, popping, or cracking from the roof structure during or right after a storm.
  5. On shops and outbuildings: bowed purlins, sliding doors that will not move, and visible deflection in a long span. These buildings give less warning than houses and fail faster. Walk them after every significant storm.


If none of those are present, judge by the drift zones and the weight table rather than by anxiety. Plenty of roofs in this valley carry a couple of feet of powder without complaint.

  • Drop zones get chosen. That snow lands somewhere, and it should not be on your AC condenser, gas meter, propane tank, or the door you actually use. On flat roofs there is a second rule: never pile removed snow in one place, because a pile is a concentrated point load that can stress a deck worse than the even blanket you just took off.

  • How do I know where the snow actually is?

  • Can I use a roof rake myself?
